Bernard died serenely on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at the Hôtel-Dieu hospital in Québec. He courageously accepted his illness and the intense suffering associated with it. A few days after receiving the diagnosis of terminal cancer, he wrote the following text for a friend:
"Bernard is in love; in love with his wife and his family, in love with his colleagues and his friends. For him, to be in love is to try to make people happy. Bernard is a happy man, blessed by the Lord and by life."
He lies peacefully in the Mount Hermon cemetery, above the cliffs of Sillery and facing the majestic St Lawrence River, just near the small Parc des Voiliers where he so enjoyed admiring the many beauties of Québec.
