His career

Dr Bernard Duval departed this life on April 19, 2008. He is now working at a higher level but still guiding his team. As a team we will continue to evolve in the direction that he laid out.

After graduating in medicine from Laval University in 1972, Dr Bernard Duval worked in Africa until 1977. He earned a master's degree in public health (M.P.H.) from Harvard in 1978 and a specialist certificate in community health from Québec and the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in 1980. He then took responsibility for public health in the Inuit communities of Northern Québec and acted as a technical advisor for the United Nations in Senegal. In 1986 he began working in Québec on the control and prevention of infectious diseases. He was a recognized expert in immunization, particularly for vaccines against Hepatitis A and B and against infections caused by the Human Papillomavirus (HPV).

In recent years, his principal research files were related to documenting the epidemiology and the impact of vaccination interventions on the prevention of infectious diseases. He developed a research program on implementation of the vaccine against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) infections that included notably the study of psychosocial aspects of use of the vaccine in synergy with screening for cervical cancer.

Keenly interested in continuing education, he frequently organized scientific meetings and was a clinical professor in the Department of Social and Preventive Medicine at Laval University. Coordinator of the scientific group in immunization at the Institut national de santé publique du Québec, he was also senior researcher in the research unit in public health of the Centre hospitalier universitaire de Québec. He was a member of the National Advisory Committe on Immunization (NACI) and the joint CCNI/CCI working group on vaccines against HPV.

Some of his more recent articles are available on PubMed. He was also a member of the following organizations:
